Library Classes A brief description of what students have been learning in the library by grade level. |
||
Kindergarten: Our Kindergarten students have been learning about library rules and the correct handling of books and materials. Recently, they have begun choosing books from the shelves on their own, rather than picking from designated books set out for them. They have been doing a great job so far! We have been reading stories to go along with what they are learning in their classroom with Mrs. Abbott. Grade One: In addition to book care and responsibility, first grade students are learning about the different parts of a book, including the spine, pages, title page, author, and illustrator. They have also been introduced to the difference between fiction and nonfiction stories. Recently we have been reading Arnold Lobel books, including the Frog And Toad series. Grade Two: The second graders are currently engaged in a unit on fairy tales. They have compared and contrasted several different versions of Cinderella, and are enjoying other books such as Rumpelstiltskin and Jack and the Beanstalk. Our focus is learning to identify the elements of a fairy tale. |
Grade Three: Third grade students have been learning about sections in the library and are being introduced to the Dewey Decimal System. We are practicing alphabetical order and how to find nonfiction books on the shelves by subject. Third grade children have also done a unit on Chris Van Allsburg. Grade Four: The regular and independent use and application of library skills serve as the focus for fourth grade. They are learning to use OPAC, our online library catalog, to find titles they are interested in and then locate that book on the shelf. In addition fourth grade has been learning about internet safety and how to be responsible when using the internet both at school and at home. |
